"TRAVELLING TALKS"

"Travelling Talks" is the first in a series of events introducing inspiring people who have promoted cultural life all over Estonia. Often stemming from grassroots movements, these citizen initiatives have enriched culture and brought life into remote places that are situated away from regional capitals.

After the introduction from Ilona Gurjanova, the founder of Tallinn Design Festival, the Buddhist monks living in Aegna, Slovenian urbanist Matej Nikšič, Mari Kalkun from Viitina, Ave Alavainu from Kärdla, the rejuvenator of Põhjala Factory Liisi Serk, Aljona Suržikova from Käru and Taavi Tamberg from Lindi Külaselts present their stories. The event is part of the European project SMOTIES (Human Cities - Creative works with small and remote places).

The event will be moderated by the designer Karl Joonas Alamaa.

"Second Chance" - Exhibition of Estonian sustainable design
Everything new is well-forgotten old! Exhibition “Second Chance” demonstrates how recycling turns used items into new attractive products which help to save limited resources and protect the environment: here you'll find jewelry made of Toyota car glass; copper earrings from small change; colored coats from Soviet children's blankets or heart-shaped brooches from Soviet enamel pots; recycled jeans´ yarn sweaters; coats made of military tents; seats of skateboard or recycled plastic bottles; old leather jackets turned into bags etc. Estonia is one of the countries that has effectively dealt with recycling during the Soviet occupation.

At the exhibition you can see design solutions from such well-known Estonian designers as Marit Ilison, Reet Aus, Kairi Lentsius, Angela Orgusaar, Urmas Lüüs, Sille Luiga, Kalli Sein, Raili Keiv, Margot Vaaderpass, Tarmo Luisk, Elmet Treier, SEOS, Igor Volkov, Eva-Karlotta Tatar, Leonardo Meigas, Anne Türn and Laura Saks. The tableware and accessories designed by the students of ceramics, glass, jewelry and wrought iron at the Estonian Academy of Arts for the Fotografiska restaurant will also be presented. The premiere of the exhibition was at the Venice Design Biennale on June 11—20, 2021. The curator of the exhibition and the author of the visuals is Ilona Gurjanova, the exhibition was designed by Leonardo Meigas.

DISPLAY OF DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE SCHOOLS
This year’s festival’s - the main focus of which is to draw attention to the growing social and communal role of design in the world - exhibitions and debates yet again include the contribution of multiple design and architecture schools. The displayed works of Tartu Art School, Pallas University of Applied Sciences, Tallinn University Haapsalu College, University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy and Estonian Academy of Arts all address the search for innovative solutions in an age where there seem to be more problems than ideas. But design education claims the opposite!

TARTU ART SCHOOL

Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, Tartu Art School has evolved into an outstanding learning environment for up-and-coming experts in the design field. Having received a valuable vocational education in our school, our graduates are ready to help solve complex issues and simplify crisis situations with their design skills. The exhibition includes outstanding works of design from Tartu Art School’s 2020/21 academic year, which are only a fragment of the body of work that has been created during the last 70 years.

The aim of a designer's work is to find the best solution to the problem. When the world is hit by a crisis, it mobilizes both designers and design students. Life may seem to stop to a bystander, but in reality it only means a pause before solutions are found and implemented. A crisis can be a designer's inspiration. This year Pallas's exhibition deals with finding solutions to several problems - unused or wasteful use of materials, forgetting one's roots in globalization, and the design for this year's Design Festival, which got a fresh look thanks to the work of one of our graduates. The success of the solutions is, of course, determined by the post-crisis perspective.

EAA Accessory Design - Application of Traditional Leather Decoration Techniques on Alternative Materials

New materials are emerging in the design world due to a demand for sustainable and plant-based alternatives. However, it creates a problem for designers who use different leather decoration techniques. In his thesis Anari Västrik tries to find out how to preserve these techniques on these alternative materials, what kind of changes need to be made in the application process and how do the materials justify their usage.

The materials were chosen on the basis of being new or not yet being available on the market - to see how they endure the techniques. In order to present the outcome as clearly as possible an overview is given, showing the application of decoration on vegetable tanned leather from which these techniques are derived from. To truly put the alternatives on a test Anari created a set of footwear, which is the most challenging act towards the material. For his work Anari received the best accessory design student award, his supervisor was Marta Moorats. Used techniques: stamping, cliché print, modelling, marbling, gilding.

EAA Jewellery and Blacksmithing - JOINT

Blacksmithing has been an essential part of architecture, but modern steel profiles demand a totally new vocabulary. During our JOINT course we concentrate on industrial steel materials with complicated shapes that need a new approach to integrate blacksmithing into contemporary cityscape. Every joint is an open possibility that is waiting to become a railing, furniture detail or a sculpture.

"Statement Shirt" by Xenia Joost

From symbolizing the wealthy aristocracy to the employee's uniform, from men's classical attire to the feminist manifesto, the iconic white formal shirt has been a powerful marker of social shifts. For more than 200 years, it has been representing status, wealth, and social norms.

In the Victorian era, wearing a white shirt was seen as upper class, the sign of someone who could afford to change shirts regularly and professionally washed to maintain that bright white look. Still a respectable addition to a gentleman's wardrobe, the white dress shirt lost the stiff and starched appearance for more of a softer look after World War I. The white shirts also became an employee's uniform – the once-classic look becoming mandatory in urban office environments.

Actresses Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Katherine Hepburn, made the white shirt an iconic fashion statement, it quickly became a symbol of modernity for women. Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall", Uma Thurman in "Pulp Fiction", and Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" immortalized the white shirt became synonymous with fashion trends and an iconic symbol of the new independent woman. Emotional and spiritual links with white colour that symbolize equality and new beginnings have made it the choice of colour for many female political icons past and present.

***

The Statement Shirt* by Xenia Joost is born from the idea of an iconic white shirt. The shirt carries within the memory of the past and the attitude of today. It holds countless stories of each of us who has its own personal statement to stand for. She emphasizes that the style and clothes we wear express our inner mind while communicating who we are and what we believe. It is a part of the visual language that we use to build a bridge between our internal and external worlds. Each day we communicate to the world through our clothes and telling our personal stories.

Xenia Joost's story is to bring joy back to fashion through a sustainable approach and a positive attitude towards the process of creation and consumption.

What is your story to tell? What is your statement?

*All the shirts are made ethically in Estonia. The cultivation of this cotton is strictly controlled to ensure full compliance with the law, high-quality standards, and the traceability of the production chain.

Wearing this shirt represents an ethical choice, yet with no compromise on style and quality.

“The False Reality of Fusion Memory"

“The False Reality of Fusion Memory” is an audiovisual augmented reality artwork influenced by time perception theories of Mihály Csíkszentmihály.

This installation is inspired by the flow theory and the individual's understanding of time experienced while creating memories that produce automatic behavior patterns. How these experiences tend to be recognized and replicated within the life cycle of individual consciousness. Is there an opportunity to learn from these repetitions, or are they just a playground for genetic memory that exists outside our understanding of time?

Do we notice time passing when our brain is occupied with motivating tasks that require unconscious behavioral responses simulated by external factors? Are our emotional responses reality or just an echo of genetic and cultural memories?

Timelessness is a state of bliss that we don't knowingly experience, but it is when we are the happiest.

Excitingly imperfect, sustainably beautiful and consciously wild: the Cervo Volante brand turns the residual leather of carefully regulated and sustainably hunted red deer from Switzerland and Estonia into unique and durable products. The hides are treated according to the strictest ecological criteria and traditional handicrafts. Thus, they are completely breathable, anti-allergic and always smell good. Their leather is one of the few in the world that is treated so consistently ecologically. Each product carries a commitment to style, nature and heritage. Xenia: "I dream that all of us could appreciate the work of others: like the work of the farmer who harvests the cotton, and appreciate the water used to produce fibre.

PALLAS UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

PALLAS UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

What will a cemetery look like in the future? What elements can one encounter there, which technologies will it contain, what opportunities will the cemeteries offer? Are the cemeteries of the future a different sort of garden? What design elements could find application in the graveyards of the future and what flowers would grow there in a hundred years?

Visitors have the opportunity to participate in the collection of ideas themselves by dropping their dreams or surreal descriptions of cemeteries in the Idea-gathering Urn, thus generating ideas for a new version or further development of the Future Cemetery.

Thulema’s new product series x prof Martin Pärn “An Office is no longer an Office”

During the Tallinn Design Festival there’s a unique opportunity to listen to and discuss new office alternatives with professor Martin Pärn, since on Tuesday, September 21 a discussion “An Office is no longer an Office” will take place in Thulema showroom. With one and a half years of the pandemic we have experienced office work becoming asynchronous, happening from distance regardless of the place and time. What does this new situation mean for companies when reshaping their work environments to support this new way of working, however, is still largely an unanswered question. — A question of design.

At the same time the launch of Thulema’s new product series will take place in Thulema showroom, which is open to all who respect good design from 20.09 to 24.09.2021 at 10—18, on Tuesday September 21 however at 10—20.

Artist Talk with Tarmo Luisk at exhibition “Less is less"

The exhibition by Tarmo Luisk is carried by the controversies of overconsumption, economic growth and green turn. Instead of manifesting he is declaiming through objects converging simplicity, polyfunctionality, emotionality and independence as the main keywords.

Objects with an industrial vibe designed by Luisk are in their modularity subject to universal rationality, at the same time smartly referring to the notions of the past. Exhibited objects have been designed during the last few years and are exhibited for the first time.

Sound design: Ville Hyvonen

“All That Is Solid Melts into Air”
In the polished speed of virtual bodies, everything that is solid melts into air. Imagining a beam of Xenon headlights modeling the boundaries of our desires. Scratched metal surface as an act of geometric vandalism. Everything that was and everything that could have been, seen through the rearview mirror. The starting point of the joint exhibition of the three artists is the connection of place-sensitive issues with a material-based approach reflected in territoriality and social constraints. Exhibition will remain on display until October 8.

PALLAS UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

At the initiative of many lighting designers, Future Cemetery will serve ideas and guesses on the topic of graveyards of tomorrow.
