"Travelling Talks" is the first in a series of events introducing inspiring people who have promoted cultural life all over Estonia. Often stemming from grassroots movements, these citizen initiatives have enriched culture and brought life into remote places that are situated away from regional capitals.
The official opening of the XVI Tallinn Design Festival will take place on the grounds of the Põhjala Factory, which has already become quite homey to the festival.
Lovers of design will have plenty to explore on Monday, September 20, as this year's #Disainiöö, which focuses on extraordinary and life-saving SOS design, will launch at 15:00 with the Travelling Talks lecture series in the Big hangar of Põhjala, where we’ll hear inspiring people who have promoted local life and culture.
Towards the evening other corners of the old rubber factory will be toured, since through two floors the international main exhibition "SOS Design", the latest display of local design and architecture schools, the exhibition of Estonian sustainable design "Second Chance" and the international graphic design exhibition "ABSURD" will be opened.
New materials are emerging in the design world due to a demand for sustainable and plant-based alternatives. However, it creates a problem for designers who use different leather decoration techniques. In his thesis Anari Västrik tries to find out how to preserve these techniques on these alternative materials, what kind of changes need to be made in the application process and how do the materials justify their usage.
The materials were chosen on the basis of being new or not yet being available on the market - to see how they endure the techniques. In order to present the outcome as clearly as possible an overview is given, showing the application of decoration on vegetable tanned leather from which these techniques are derived from. To truly put the alternatives on a test Anari created a set of footwear, which is the most challenging act towards the material. For his work Anari received the best accessory design student award, his supervisor was Marta Moorats. Used techniques: stamping, cliché print, modelling, marbling, gilding.
At the initiative of many lighting designers, Future Cemetery will serve ideas and guesses on the topic of graveyards of tomorrow.
What will a cemetery look like in the future? What elements can one encounter there, which technologies will it contain, what opportunities will the cemeteries offer? Are the cemeteries of the future a different sort of garden? What design elements could find application in the graveyards of the future and what flowers would grow there in a hundred years?
Visitors have the opportunity to participate in the collection of ideas themselves by dropping their dreams or surreal descriptions of cemeteries in the Idea-gathering Urn, thus generating ideas for a new version or further development of the Future Cemetery.

The exhibition “ABSURD” was completed for the annual event series dedicated to graphic design. The 2021 traditional competition of the Haapsalu Graphic Design Festival received a total of 446 works from 234 authors from all over the world. A jury of professionals selected 85 final works through a tight screen. The subject of the absurd is dissected on the basis of the authors’ personal views and design beliefs on a very wide scale, from innocent bizarreness to sharp political remarks.
During the Tallinn Design Festival there’s a unique opportunity to listen to and discuss new office alternatives with professor Martin Pärn, since on Tuesday, September 21 a discussion “An Office is no longer an Office” will take place in Thulema showroom. With one and a half years of the pandemic we have experienced office work becoming asynchronous, happening from distance regardless of the place and time. What does this new situation mean for companies when reshaping their work environments to support this new way of working, however, is still largely an unanswered question. — A question of design.

“The False Reality of Fusion Memory” is an audiovisual augmented reality artwork influenced by time perception theories of Mihály Csíkszentmihály.
This installation is inspired by the flow theory and the individual's understanding of time experienced while creating memories that produce automatic behavior patterns. How these experiences tend to be recognized and replicated within the life cycle of individual consciousness. Is there an opportunity to learn from these repetitions, or are they just a playground for genetic memory that exists outside our understanding of time?
Do we notice time passing when our brain is occupied with motivating tasks that require unconscious behavioral responses simulated by external factors? Are our emotional responses reality or just an echo of genetic and cultural memories?
Timelessness is a state of bliss that we don't knowingly experience, but it is when we are the happiest.
The newly opened gallery shop Estonian Design House + hosts the work of, for example, Eve Hanson, August, Piret Loog, Tanel Veenre, Kelpman Textile, Süsimust, New Vintage by Kriss, Reet Aus, KIRA Shoes, Karl Joonas Alamaa, Stella Soomlais.

Fennecfit focuses on producing durable, sustainable, ethical and long-lasting activewear with an outstanding design. Clothes are made by analysing and following the needs of an active woman: style, functionality and endurance.
The brand is determined to choose recycled fabrics, biodegradable and recycled packaging. The ethical production of the clothes takes place in Portugal and Italy with our excellent partners.
Founder of Fennecfit Birgit Kool: "The people I relate to, and the surroundings inspire me deeply. Throughout time I’ve gotten ideas and inspiration from life around me."
Special thanks to the family, Nicolai, Robin and the Fennecfit family around the world!
“Instead of focusing on her race, age or occupation we visualise a woman who strives to become the best version of herself, keeping her head held high based on her own life values.”
Human Highness is a luxury sustainable womenswear brand that started its journey by creating empowering capes for women - believing in elegance with a touch of a super heroic upliftment.
Being handcrafted and painstakingly tailored in Estonia, collaborating with other female artisans, using natural or deadstock materials, produced by demand with slower pace and off season production. Their handwoven wool fabrics are made by talented women of Kango Textile..
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Merle Saal, Julia Shashkina, Mai-Liis Sipria, Vivika Sopp, Nataliya Sukhorukova, Rita Assor and many others who have helped the Human Highness brand.
It is a matter of choice to make a difference – re-create and re-use instead of waste.
BalticSeaBlue collection is created by upcycling post-consumer textile waste from the hospitality sector. Each piece has been sorted carefully. The fabrics were dyed in different shades inspired by the Nordic sea's greyish blue palette.
Xenia: "I dream that all of us could appreciate the work of others: like the work of the farmer who harvests the cotton, and appreciate the water used to produce fibre. I dream that we learn not to exploit but to collaborate. Not to waste but to create. Not to pollute but to clean instead. I dream of BalticSeaBlue."
Textile: "I am not wasted, I am beautiful."

The international conference SOS Design, which will take place within the framework of the Tallinn Design Festival on Thursday, September 23, has this time focused on the crisis topic. The conversation will revolve around the crucial role of design in resolving changes and crises in society. In the context of the pandemic, the role of crisis planning is more important than ever. In addition to the pandemic, there are other global problems that require urgent intervention: the economic crisis, global warming, the energy crisis, poverty, and also the mental crisis.

Authors: Andri Luup, Ilvar Piisk, Allan Lahi, Anne Türn, Toomas Täht, Anna Kristin McCarthy, Margus Kontus etc.
