"Travelling Talks" is the first in a series of events introducing inspiring people who have promoted cultural life all over Estonia. Often stemming from grassroots movements, these citizen initiatives have enriched culture and brought life into remote places that are situated away from regional capitals.

The official opening of the XVI Tallinn Design Festival will take place on the grounds of the Põhjala Factory, which has already become quite homey to the festival.

Lovers of design will have plenty to explore on Monday, September 20, as this year's #Disainiöö, which focuses on extraordinary and life-saving SOS design, will launch at 15:00 with the Travelling Talks lecture series in the Big hangar of Põhjala, where we’ll hear inspiring people who have promoted local life and culture.

Towards the evening other corners of the old rubber factory will be toured, since through two floors the international main exhibition "SOS Design", the latest display of local design and architecture schools, the exhibition of Estonian sustainable design "Second Chance" and the international graphic design exhibition "ABSURD" will be opened.

New materials are emerging in the design world due to a demand for sustainable and plant-based alternatives. However, it creates a problem for designers who use different leather decoration techniques. In his thesis Anari Västrik tries to find out how to preserve these techniques on these alternative materials, what kind of changes need to be made in the application process and how do the materials justify their usage.

The materials were chosen on the basis of being new or not yet being available on the market - to see how they endure the techniques. In order to present the outcome as clearly as possible an overview is given, showing the application of decoration on vegetable tanned leather from which these techniques are derived from. To truly put the alternatives on a test Anari created a set of footwear, which is the most challenging act towards the material. For his work Anari received the best accessory design student award, his supervisor was Marta Moorats. Used techniques: stamping, cliché print, modelling, marbling, gilding.

At the initiative of many lighting designers, Future Cemetery will serve ideas and guesses on the topic of graveyards of tomorrow.

What will a cemetery look like in the future? What elements can one encounter there, which technologies will it contain, what opportunities will the cemeteries offer? Are the cemeteries of the future a different sort of garden? What design elements could find application in the graveyards of the future and what flowers would grow there in a hundred years?

Visitors have the opportunity to participate in the collection of ideas themselves by dropping their dreams or surreal descriptions of cemeteries in the Idea-gathering Urn, thus generating ideas for a new version or further development of the Future Cemetery.

The Italian Design Day 2021 will take place in Tallinn on September 22, with a Live Design Tech Dialogue “Artisans of InnovatiON” led by Arch. Dario Donato, Design Principal at Spatialconnection(s). The event is organized by the Italian Embassy in Tallinn, in collaboration with the Estonian Association of Designers.

An active conversation with students and professionals on current technologies for producing unconventional design will help to define the impact of architecture. A special focus will be put on the relationship between design and a sustainable creative and business process.

The international conference SOS Design, which will take place within the framework of the Tallinn Design Festival on Thursday, September 23, has this time focused on the crisis topic. As a tradition, the autumn design market will again be a part of the festival weekend: to explore the Design Street no driver’s license is needed as there's plenty of room for wanderers on foot! Walk through the streets and discover lots of great fashion-, accessory-, product- and interior design.

Over a hundred designers and design brands will occupy the main hangar of Põhjala. In addition to a pleasing experience, it is a great opportunity to learn about the designers and the stories behind the products and purchase some of the best design with special prices for yourself and your loved ones.

New materials are emerging in the design world due to a demand for sustainable and plant-based alternatives. However, it creates a problem for designers who use different leather decoration techniques. In his thesis Anari Västrik tries to find out how to preserve these techniques on these alternative materials, what kind of changes need to be made in the application process and how do the materials justify their usage.

The materials were chosen on the basis of being new or not yet being available on the market - to see how they endure the techniques. In order to present the outcome as clearly as possible an overview is given, showing the application of decoration on vegetable tanned leather from which these techniques are derived from. To truly put the alternatives on a test Anari created a set of footwear, which is the most challenging act towards the material. For his work Anari received the best accessory design student award, his supervisor was Marta Moorats. Used techniques: stamping, cliché print, modelling, marbling, gilding.

At the initiative of many lighting designers, Future Cemetery will serve ideas and guesses on the topic of graveyards of tomorrow.

What will a cemetery look like in the future? What elements can one encounter there, which technologies will it contain, what opportunities will the cemeteries offer? Are the cemeteries of the future a different sort of garden? What design elements could find application in the graveyards of the future and what flowers would grow there in a hundred years?

Visitors have the opportunity to participate in the collection of ideas themselves by dropping their dreams or surreal descriptions of cemeteries in the Idea-gathering Urn, thus generating ideas for a new version or further development of the Future Cemetery.

The exhibition “ABSURD” was completed for the annual event series dedicated to graphic design. The 2021 traditional competition of the Haapsalu Graphic Design Festival received a total of 446 works from 234 authors from all over the world. A jury of professionals selected 85 final works through a tight screen. The subject of the absurd is dissected on the basis of the authors’ personal views and design beliefs on a very wide scale, from innocent bizarreness to sharp political remarks.

We all think about a better future. Yet often there is a controversy between thoughts and reality.

What if we try to depict our dreams or visions? A common canvas will be installed so each of our thought about the future could be visualized. For the final hour of the event we will discuss the completed artwork.
